When finishing the walls and ceilings of a new flat or renovation in Bangalore, one of the first decisions you face is whether to apply POP punning before painting or to paint directly on the cement plaster. The difference between these two approaches is visible every day — in the smoothness of your walls, the way paint finishes look, and how well the surface holds up over years of use. This guide explains what POP punning actually does, when it is essential, when it can be skipped, and how Elysian approaches punning as part of a complete ceiling and partition project.
What is POP punning?
POP punning is the application of a thin, even layer of Plaster of Paris over cement-plastered walls and ceilings. The standard application thickness is 2 to 4mm. The purpose is to fill micro-undulations, hairline cracks, roughness, and patching marks in the cement surface, creating a smooth, even base for paint application. Cement plaster — even when well-done — has a micro-texture that remains visible through paint, particularly in raking light or with sheen finishes. POP punning eliminates this texture, producing a surface that is smooth enough for any paint finish, including designer matte, metallic, or textured finishes. Our POP punning service covers entire homes as well as individual rooms across Bangalore.
What is direct wall paint (without punning)?
Painting directly on cement plaster means applying primer and then paint over the cured cement surface without a POP or gypsum skim coat. The result is functional — the walls are painted, the colour is applied — but the micro-texture of the cement surface remains visible, particularly in low-angle (raking) light or on sheen or semi-gloss finishes. Direct-paint walls tend to show imperfections more than punned walls, and the paint surface is also slightly less even. This approach is common in lower-grade residential projects, utility rooms, and spaces where wall aesthetics are not a priority.
When POP punning is essential
POP punning is essential when: you are using premium paint finishes — matte emulsions, velvet, silk, metallic, or textured paints — that reveal every surface undulation; the walls are in an area with significant natural or artificial raking light (near large windows, under spotlights) where imperfections become visible; the room is a primary living or reception space where the wall finish quality matters to occupants and visitors; or you are applying dark colours, which show texture and imperfections more than light colours. In new Bangalore apartments with block masonry and cement plaster, POP punning before painting is standard practice for any room above basic quality.
When you can skip punning
Punning is not necessary when: the space is a storage room, utility area, or service corridor where wall aesthetics are not a concern; the budget is very tight and the walls are in good condition with minimal texture; a textured or stone-effect paint finish is being applied that will deliberately obscure the surface beneath; or the walls will be covered with tiles, panelling, or wallpaper that sits on top of the plaster. In some utility and service areas of commercial projects, direct paint is perfectly appropriate and eliminates unnecessary cost.
The punning + paint workflow
The correct workflow for high-quality wall and ceiling finishing is: cement plaster curing (28 days minimum) → surface cleaning and sanding → first POP coat (2–3mm) → drying (24–48 hours) → second coat if needed → sanding to a smooth finish → primer coat → two coats of paint. Rushing any stage — particularly the drying time between POP coats and before painting — leads to visible cracks in the punned surface. Elysian's team allows full drying time at each stage and sands between coats to ensure the final surface is ready for paint.
How Elysian handles POP punning
POP punning is a natural extension of our ceiling and partition work — most projects involve both a false ceiling installation and wall finishing before handover. We handle the complete sequence: ceiling installation, partition construction (if required), electrical routing, POP punning on walls and ceilings, and surface preparation for painting. This means the handover to the paint contractor (or to the client's own painter) is seamless — a smooth, primed surface ready for the final finish.
