Non-asbestos, non-combustible calcium silicate ceiling tiles — the hygienic, fire-safe choice for hospitals, labs, kitchens, and clean environments.
Calcium silicate ceiling tiles are a specialised class of ceiling material composed of calcium silicate compound reinforced with cellulose fibres — formed under heat and pressure into dimensionally stable, high-density tiles. Unlike gypsum plasterboard, which is made from calcium sulphate, calcium silicate tiles derive their strength and fire resistance from a fundamentally different chemical composition that makes them non-combustible, resistant to moisture-induced sagging, and inhospitable to microbial growth. These properties make them the material of choice for environments where ordinary ceiling materials simply cannot meet the required standards.
Calcium silicate tiles are typically installed in a standard suspended grid ceiling system — the same 600mm × 600mm modular format used with mineral fibre tiles in commercial offices. The tiles drop into the grid from above and can be lifted out for maintenance access, making them practical in environments such as hospital ceilings with complex above-ceiling services. This combination of compliance, hygiene, and accessibility is why calcium silicate has become the industry standard for healthcare facilities and regulated commercial environments across India.
At Elysian, we install calcium silicate ceiling systems in hospitals, pharmaceutical manufacturing facilities, commercial kitchens, food courts, and data centres throughout Bangalore. We select tile grades based on your specific compliance requirements — ensuring the correct fire rating, surface finish, and structural specification for each project type. Unlike general contractors who use calcium silicate as a substitute for gypsum, we treat it as a specialist installation requiring precise grid alignment, correct tile handling to prevent edge damage, and appropriate joint sealing where hygiene regulations demand a sealed ceiling plane.
Best suited for: Hospitals, operating theatres, ICUs, pharmaceutical labs, food processing areas, commercial kitchens, server rooms, food courts, school classrooms in government and private institutions, and any environment requiring strict hygiene compliance or non-combustible certification.
Four capabilities that make calcium silicate the only appropriate choice for regulated, high-compliance environments.
Calcium silicate tiles are classified as non-combustible under Indian building standards, meaning they do not burn, do not support flame spread, and do not release toxic gases in a fire. This is the highest fire safety classification available for ceiling materials — required for hospitals, pharmaceutical facilities, and public buildings under the National Building Code of India. For projects where fire compliance certification is a condition of occupancy, calcium silicate is typically the only viable ceiling option.
The dense, non-porous surface of calcium silicate tiles provides no substrate for mould growth or bacterial colonisation. Unlike mineral fibre tiles, which have an open, fibrous structure that can trap contaminants, calcium silicate presents a smooth, cleanable surface that meets healthcare and food safety hygiene requirements. In operating theatres, sterile processing rooms, and food production environments, this property is not optional — it is a compliance requirement that calcium silicate consistently meets.
One of the critical failure modes in commercial ceilings is moisture-induced sag — where ceiling tiles absorb humidity and deform under their own weight. This is common with standard mineral fibre tiles in kitchens, food processing areas, and regions with high ambient humidity. Calcium silicate tiles do not absorb moisture in the same way, maintaining their flat profile and dimensional integrity even in consistently humid environments. Over a multi-year installation life, this stability translates to a ceiling that looks as precise at year ten as it did at installation.
Because calcium silicate tiles install into a standard suspended grid, every tile is individually removable for above-ceiling access. In hospitals where medical gas lines, electrical conduits, and IT cabling run above the ceiling, this accessibility is essential for maintenance without ceiling damage or disruption. Server rooms with regular cable management needs benefit similarly. Unlike monolithic ceiling systems that must be cut and patched to access services, calcium silicate grid systems keep the ceiling intact while making above-ceiling infrastructure fully accessible.
Tiles and systems selected for compliance, hygiene, and long-term performance in regulated environments.
Non-combustible, asbestos-free tiles with smooth or textured surface finish. Available in standard and cleanroom-grade specifications with appropriate fire and hygiene certifications.
Standard 24mm or 15mm aluminium grid system — main runners, cross tees, and wall angles — suspended from the structural slab with adjustable steel wire hangers for precise levelling.
For healthcare and food compliance installations, sealed grid systems with perimeter sealant eliminate gaps between tiles and grid — preventing above-ceiling contaminants from entering the occupied space below.
Where a uniformly painted ceiling surface is required for hygiene inspection compliance, we apply water-based, low-VOC hygienic paint over calcium silicate tiles — producing a clinical white, seamless appearance.
A structured installation sequence that meets compliance standards and minimises disruption in operational facilities.
We review the project's fire safety, hygiene, and regulatory requirements before selecting tile grade, grid type, and sealing specification. For healthcare projects, we confirm compliance with NBC requirements and facility-specific standards before any material is ordered.
The room is surveyed for ceiling height, structural attachment points, above-ceiling service routing, and lighting or ventilation positions. The grid layout is planned to ensure symmetrical tile placement and alignment with fixtures such as diffusers, sprinklers, and recessed lights.
Wall angles are fixed along the room perimeter at the specified ceiling height. Suspension wires are anchored to the structural slab and main runners are hung and levelled. The perimeter-to-perimeter level is verified before any cross tees are installed.
Cross tees are clipped into the main runners to complete the grid pattern. Service positions — light fixtures, AC diffusers, sprinkler heads, smoke detectors — are integrated into specific grid modules with appropriate cutouts and brackets.
Calcium silicate tiles are placed into the grid from above with care taken to protect edges from chipping. Border tiles are cut using appropriate blades for clean edges. In sealed grid installations, sealant is applied at each tile-to-grid junction before final placement.
The completed ceiling is inspected for level, alignment, and tile integrity. Any chipped or damaged tiles are replaced before handover. The grid and tile surfaces are wiped clean. For healthcare projects, we provide a completion record documenting material specifications and tile placement for compliance records.
