PVC wall panels are a direct functional replacement for tiles in bathrooms — waterproof, easy to clean, and available in realistic marble and stone finishes. The key advantages over tiles: no grout joints (which harbour mould), faster installation with no wet adhesive drying time, lighter weight, and lower disruption. In many renovation projects, panels can be installed directly over existing tiles if the tile surface is flat and sound — eliminating tile removal entirely and saving significant time and cost.

The quality varies significantly by product grade. Entry-level panels look obviously plastic. Mid-to-high grade panels — the range Elysian works with — use embossed, printed surfaces that replicate marble, stone, and wood-grain at a level that reads as intentional and attractive in most lighting conditions. When installed with clean edge profiles and aligned joins, the result is a polished, finished wall that most visitors would not identify as PVC on first impression. Two methods are used depending on the substrate. Direct bonding — construction adhesive applied to each panel, pressed onto the wall — is the fastest method for flat, sound walls. Batten-fixed installation — horizontal aluminium battens fixed to the wall first, with panels clipped to the battens — is preferred for uneven walls, wet zones where ventilation behind panels is beneficial, or where future panel replacement is a consideration. Both methods are finished with matching edge profiles and perimeter silicone sealant.

Standard PVC wall panels perform well in normal kitchen and bathroom temperature ranges. They should not be installed directly adjacent to open-flame gas cooktops or surfaces that reach temperatures above approximately 60°C. For kitchen splashback areas immediately behind gas burners, we advise a glass or stainless steel insert for the zone directly behind the flame, with PVC panels extending from that point. In many cases, yes. If the existing tiles are flat, securely adhered, and free from cracked or hollow sections, PVC panels can be bonded directly over them — saving tile removal time, cost, and dust. We check the existing tile surface during the site visit to confirm suitability. Tiles with significant undulation, loose sections, or sealed surfaces may not provide adequate adhesion, and in those cases we recommend a batten-fixed approach or tile removal before panelling.

Quality PVC panels correctly installed in appropriate environments last 15 to 25 years. The surface does not fade, stain, or require repainting. The primary risk factor for premature failure is moisture ingress at panel edges or joins — a sealing and installation quality issue rather than a material lifespan issue. Panels installed with proper edge profiles and fully sealed perimeter joints, in environments appropriate for the panel's moisture rating, maintain their appearance and integrity for the life of the installation.
